Pembury Community Centre mural project with artists Lily Mixe and Billy Colours
Working in collaboration with artists Lily Mixe and Billy Colour, the young residents of Pembury Estate designed and painted this mural inside the Pembury Community Centre. The mural is called ‘The Game of Life’ and represents the inevitable highs, lows, challenges and joys that we all face as we move through our lives. Referencing the classic game of Snakes and Ladders, is shows the differences and similarities in how our individual life journeys will play out and how our decisions will affect the course of action. Referencing issues such as financial security, mental health and healthy lifestyles, the mural is a reminder that we have the power to make positive decisions and that we can start over at any time. This project was generously supported by Stop Loan Sharks.
Creative workshops at All Points East In The Neighbourhood 2019
Taking place in east London’s Victoria Park, we participated in All Points East’s four day community event, their ‘In the Neighbourhood’ festival in May 2019. We programmed four days of free creative workshops from inside our beautiful bell tents and were visited by hundred’s of young people and families enjoying our workshops over the Easter holidays. Activities included making tie-dye scarfs, screen printing tote bags, designing festival flags, plant pot painting, making dream-catchers and a guest slot from local charity Poetry in Wood to make wooden key-rings.
Art installation created by artist Helena Doyle & Hackney Quest
Artist Helena Doyle worked with young people aged 8-11 years old from local charity Hackney Quest to create an original piece of installation art made entirely from waste and non-recyclable materials. The installation aims to highlight the abundance of waste materials in the UK and to create value from materials that would otherwise end up in landfill. The young people learned creative skills making pom-poms, tassels, giant plaits and garlands from plastic bags, netting, bottle tops, sweet wrappers and more. The final piece was exhibited at Stour Space gallery in Hackney Wick as part of London Craft Week 2020. The project was made possible thanks to funding from the Mayor of London and Hackney Wick and Fish Island Creative Enterprise Zone.
