Let’s talk about social enterprise…

Today is Saturday 14 October AKA Social Saturday! Social Saturday is an annual campaign run by Social Enterprise UK raising awareness of the difference that social enterprises make in communities on your doorstep and around the world.

So what exactly is a social enterprise?

Social enterprises are businesses that put people and the planet first by re-investing their profits to provide training, employment, housing, health, education, clean water and more. Social enterprise isn’t limited to any one sector and it can cover any type of business or product that has an underlying social mission.

Some of our local favourites…

Here in Hackney we are blessed with a thriving social enterprise community. We love to support and connect with fellow social neighbours and here are some of our fave’s…

  • Luminary Bakery – This gorgeous bakery in N16 serves delicious cakes, sourdough and coffee alongside a serious social mission. Founded to offer opportunities to women from disadvantaged backgrounds, Luminary uses the power of baking to provide employment, entrepreneurship support and skills development. Ready, steady, bake!
  • Hackney Herbal – This social enterprise is all about sharing the magical powers of plants and herbs, spreading knowledge on how to utilise them through their workshops and courses. They provide free classes in the community using their profits and they have upcoming classes in collaboration with us on Saturday 28 October and Sunday 16 December, check them out!
  • Restoration Station – A small vintage furniture workshop in Shoreditch making a big difference to people’s lives. Run by addiction recovery charity Spitalfields Crypt Trust, they provide skills and training for restoring vintage furniture providing a much needed routine and focus for those in recovery.
  • Supply Yoga – Find your balance with this accessible and affordable yoga studio in Clapton. They use funds from their public classes to provide free yoga to community support service users across the borough.

Hackney Arts is proud to be a social enterprise registered with Social Enterprise UK. To support us in our work, please buy tickets for our Events Programme or go to Artist Bookings to book our creative activities for offices and parties.
